Open space design for planned community
Design a green space which will alleviate drainage issues, create privacy for residents fronting the open space.
The long linear space between homes provided a natural green space which was sloped to drain in the middle. Protected grates and underground piping were installed to drain the space from heavy rains. The space allows for children, families and adults to play various outdoor games and sports.
Primarily native trees and ornamental grasses were used to provide a layer of privacy in front of the homes. This also lends a softening of the tightly clustered homes. Evergreen and deciduous species were chosen to assure visual interest would be maintained throughout the year. This also allows for a shaded sidewalk in the warm summer months and a warm walkway in the cooler months.
An architectural reprieve was created through use of planting the sides of the open space with varied heights of trees, shrubs and ornamental grasses. This application makes the user feel as though they are walking through a forested meadow. As the seasons change pops of reds, purples, pinks and bright greens delight the eyes while the use of magnolias and pines appeal to the olfactory senses.
