When one lives in the country and likes to entertain like they are in the city, the luxury of a larger lot is the perfect backdrop for creating a multi-functional outdoor space.

Incorporate a large pool for lap swimming off the existing raised patio. Make a large patio area to include an outdoor fireplace. Preserve existing blueberry hedge. Revise all planting beds along side and front of home.
The expanse of existing open space between the existing raised patio and the blueberry hedge called for the full-sized pool to be located parallel to these objects. As the land gently slopes towards the house thought was given to raising the pool/spa area to alleviate negative drainage. An oversized sunshelf was used to provide grandchildren a space to play as well as a tanning space for others.
A large space for outdoor entertaining was included near the outdoor fireplace to take advantage of cooler nights. Built-in seating was designed with the fireplace to increase the capacity of the space to entertain comfortably, including storage below the seats for cushions.
Planting beds were revised along the house. An extended garden area with lowered shrubs was put along the entrance of the house in front of the porch. This provided a solution to the overgrown hedge that overpowered the entry.
Quite a few schematic variations were worked through involving the raising and lowering of different elements to accommodate grade change. In the end a raised spa with cut stone was built with a planter wall to achieve the desired effect of a space that walks the divide of a natural and man-made space.
