Front Entry Design, Main Entry Courtyard, Interior Courtyard
Privacy along fence line to neighboring property, create enchanting main entry courtyard, shield parking lot lights from adjacent site off NE corner, enhance view from large window in NW corner of the residence.
Upon approach of the home use of a specimen Bismarkia palm was used in a raised bed prior to entering through the metal gated fence. The specimen was chosen to match the entry courtyard plantings. An olive bosque was created directly inside the entry courtyard. Filtered light from the trees and ornamental grasses at the base of the olive's were used to soften the foreground. The grey green hues of the olive's and Bismarkia were chosen to visually pull the viewer from the exterior of the courtyard to the interior.
Clumping bamboo provided the height and density needed to shield the neighboring house without taking up too much of the side yard. To provide more privacy and a sense of brief enclosure before opening up to the remainder of the site, varying layers of plantings were selected to use. Deep greens were selected to offset the lighter tones of the trees and palms. A Japanese maple at the fence line of the entry courtyard was placed to create interest when looking out from the house to the driveway.
Simple, yet elegant dwarf evergreens were used along the breezeway signaling a change in space. This also accentuated the horizontal planes of intersections among the breezeway and walkway to the interior courtyard. The pergola overhead was planted with wisteria to provide color and shelter. Italian Cypress on either side of the pergola accentuates the vertical columns.
The interior courtyard containing a water feature (designed by architect) provided a space for water loving plants in raised beds along either side of the fountain base. This included an area for vines to take foot in order to grow over the stone backplate of the fountain. A Japanese maple was used for a focal point within the courtyard. When viewed from the entry courtyard it is architecturally framed through the breezeway and becomes a terminus of the view with a pop of red against the white walls.
The side yards were planted with clumping bamboo for more privacy. The use of camellias and azaleas provide blooms through various seasons. Two large citrus trees were placed in the rear corridor to help shield the master bathroom and create another oasis of shade. Large palms of varying height provide blocking of the parking lot lights in the evening from the adjacent property.
A set of landscape packages with options to suit a variety of homeowners desires and initial landscape budgets was created.
