tellUs Project Proposal

To make a pronounced entry and sense of place a large planting bed with lettering for the pool club was placed at the entry to the pool area. This was designed in connection with the slightly raised sunshelf. Lettering above the sunshelf was used to provide a matching appreciation of entry from the opposite side of the pool deck which has stair access to the sandy beach down the road. Incorporating an ipe boardwalk was used to mimic the walk from the ocean on the pool deck. This became a perfect solution for housing irrigation piping below the boardwalk.

Four areas of shaded seating, lounging and "hammocking" were placed throughout the pool deck. The hammock area with retractable awnings and built in planters, to provide solitude from one hammock to the next, was placed closest to the ocean to take full advantage of the ocean breezes. A small bosque of olive trees along the slightly raised ipe portion of the pool deck was used for natural shade. Another bosque of olive trees was designed to accompany the lounge area with a retractable shade structure in between tree boxes. The entry to the pool deck was transformed to include a sheltered area with chaise lounge chairs.

As the pool deck sits upon a garage next to the Gulf of Mexico, attention needed to be paid to wind elements. All shade structures and retractable awnings needed to be designed in a way as to withstand high winds. Shade for pool frequenters was paramount as the pool deck had little shade. A mature portion of the community requested more shade in seating areas for both themselves and children. Removal of unwanted raised planter boxes on the side of the site created a space for a small putting green requested by the residents.
